The 359 Day Fitness and Health Challenge

Today is the first day of the rest of my healthy life - no, seriously.

This blog is for people like me who say over, and over, and over, and over, and over (you get the point) that this is the year/month/day that I get healthy and stay that way.  The extra incentive for me to actually do what I say I'm going to do is that I am publishing this on the information super highway, and YOU, dear readers, will be able to hold ME accountable.

Last month I received a nice little holiday bonus from my employer and took it straight to the gym.  Boost Fit Club is my favorite gym and I have worked-out at, I mean 'joined' plenty of them here in the Music City.   To learn more about Boost please go to www.boostfitclub.com

Why do I love Boost so much? First, it's only 1.04 miles from my house (yup, I mapquested it).  And why is that important? Because I tend to come up with all sorts of excuses as to why I don't want to "drive" to the gym.  Second reason, it's the best kept secret in town - it's never crowded, it's clean, and it's modern.  There are roughly 5 to 10 gyms within five miles of my home and they are all crowded, especially the YMCA.  The third reason I love Boost is this person.....

Tarik Ramusovic is the best trainer in the City.  I've worked out with six trainers throughout the years, part of the old 'getting ready, to get ready' fitness and health plan I used to follow.  I've had the pleasure of having my booty-kicked twice before by Tarik and beginning January 21st I will be in for round three.  Look at that smile...does he not look like the sweetest guy on the planet??? Awwww.... He is super-sweet but don't let that boyish charm full you, he is a disciplinarian.  In fact, when I went in to sign up for the 10-week Boost Program (uh huh, my third time) I told the helpful membership guy my intention and that I was probably the whiniest client Tarik has ever had....but I digress....

Yep, this is round 3.  Why do I keep doing this to myself? Well, mainly I think I'm smarter than everyone else.  Seriously.  I started thinking the other day...why am I right back where I was before - unhealthy, out of shape, and unhappy? Then it dawned on me - I'm one of those people that used to drive me crazy in college, the kind of person who just slapped their part of the project together and threw it over the fence to the rest of the team.  The person that just looked you right in the eye and nodded.  The person who didn't want to actually discipline themselves enough to make a difference.  Cringe! That's not who I am in every other facet of my life (I think).  After reading an article online that asks the reader "would you date you?" I had to resoundly say NO.

So, I started wondering what is it going to take for me to actually internalize and APPLY all the things I read in Women's Health, Oxygen, Fitness, not to mention what I am told by fitness/nutritional geniuses like the aforementioned Tarik? Again, this blog is designed to help me do that and share with you my goals; but also learn as I go.

Below are my Top 10 Goals that roll up to the overall goal of being fit and healthy:
  1. Lose body fat, gain muscle mass, see my abs again, make my butt bigger (it's one of the only small parts of my body, lol),
  2. Cut my risk for heart disease (using my waist circumference as an indicator - it's over 35" YIKES),
  3. Minimize my risk for cancer (something few in my family has been able to do)
  4. Quit smoking once and for all (yes, I'm one of the few who still doesn't 'get it'),
  5. Limit my caffeine and alcohol intake,
  6. Up my energy level,
  7. Increase my water intake,
  8. Pay attention to nutrition - learn how to eat better and actually do it.
  9. Inspire my boyfriend to be healthier, too (had to throw that one in, he talks a big talk just like moi ;)
  10. Push myself when doing certain exercises that I don't like and would typically "whine" myself through or bother not to do.
So, as I said my 10-week Boost Program begins on January 21st.  That leaves me 14 days to "get ready to get ready" - just kidding!!! Today I started eating better and tonight I will begin my cardio with the goal of at least 20 minutes.  Drumroll....my starting weight is 175 (gasp).  Not good, not good at all.
